Loan Repayment FAQ's

When a client receives a loan from CGMA, often times there are questions about repayment options.  Detail on repayments and the following FAQ's may be found under Chapter 5-B of the CGMA Manual.  Here are some of the most frequently asked questions:

How is repayment amount determined?

CGMA's repayment policy is to have all clients repay their loans within 12 months when possible, within 36 months if necessary, but not more than 60 months without contacting CGMA-HQ.  The representative should use the budget form to help determine a reasonable amount.

Which clients can repay by allotment?

Active duty, civilian and retired military (paid by the Coast Guard and not the VA) clients can repay by allotment (automatic deduction from pay).

Which clients can repay by cash?

Members that typically repay by allotment have the option to choose cash repayment as long as they repay the loan within 30 days of the check reissue date. (this usually only occurs when there is an error with the pay center, or the member is waiting on an insurance claim). 

Auxiliary members, reserve members, widows, widowers and others, retired military (paid by the VA), and Commissioned Personnel of the Public Health Service serving with the Coast Guard must repay by cash.

When do allotment repayments begin?

Allotment repayments begin the month after the CGMA check was issued. For example, if a loan was received on May 16th, repayments would begin coming out of a client's paycheck in June.

What should a client do if they do not see the allotment coming out of their pay?

A client should contact CGMA-HQ at HQS-DG-CGMA@uscg.mil if they notice their repayments are not coming out on time.  There may be an issue with the pay center or an unexpected delay.

When do cash repayments begin?

Cash repayments also begin the month after the CGMA check was issued. CGMA will send a cash bill to the address on file when the member took out the loan.  Clients may send a check or money order, with their account number on the memo line, to the following address for payment:

What if a client in unable to make a payment?

The client should contact CGMA-HQ right away to explain the situation. We may be able to delay repayment a month or two, reduce the client's monthly repayment amount, or decide when a grant conversion might be an option (full budget and/or documentation is needed in these determinations)

What if a client wishes to increase monthly payments or repay the loan early in lump sum?

The client should contact CGMA-HQ at HQS-DG-CGMA@uscg.mil with their name and account number, requesting either a payoff amount or an increased monthly repayment.  Someone will contact them with instructions.
