Education Program

General Information

Coast Guard Mutual Assistance Education grants and loans foster long-term financial well-being by helping Coast Guard families pursue their academic goals through post-secondary education.

For the purpose of CGMA Education Grant and Loan Programs, the phrase

All CGMA Clients refers to all Active Duty Coast Guard and Retired Coast Guard military personnel, members of the Coast Guard Selected Reserve, Coast Guard Civilian employees, Coast Guard Auxiliarists, and Public Health Officers serving with the Coast Guard.

CGMA Clients may request assistance on behalf of their eligible family members.

Eligible Family Members include: the CGMA Client’s spouse and children under 23 years of age who are unmarried, non-service members, and dependent upon the CGMA client for over half of their support.

Small Green Arrow Individuals may be eligible to receive education assistance under more than one CGMA program simultaneously
Small Green Arrow If you are applying for more than one program, it is recommended that you make several copies of the forms before filling them out, since one form may be applicable to more than one program
Small Green Arrow We suggest that you make photocopies of the completed forms at every stage of the loan or grant process to keep for future reference
Small Green Arrow Exceptions to these programs will not normally be made. This includes "bridge" loans in anticipation of assistance from another source

Authorized Assistance

Coast Guard Mutual Assistance is pleased to offer a number of education grant and loan programs to help clients and their families financially meet their academic goals. Here is a quick summary:

Program Name
Program Summary
Stafford/PLUS Loan Origination Fee Refund

Reimbursement of the standard 3% origination fee associated with the Federal Stafford Loan and the Federal Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS).

Available to all CGMA clients, their spouse, and dependent children.

Supplemental Education Grants (SEG)

Reimbursement of certain specific costs associated with seeking an undergraduate degree, VoTech certificate, or GED.

Available to certain CGMA clients on behalf of themselves, their spouse, or dependent children.

Vocational and Technical Training (VoTech) Student Loan Program

Loans for Department of Education or Department of Veterans Affairs approved vocational technical training courses.

Available to all CGMA clients on behalf of themselves, their spouse, or dependent children.

Supplemental Student Loan Program

Loans to supplement the Coast Guard Tuition Assistance (CGTA) Program.

Available to all CGMA clients who participate in CGTA.
